HMRC has confirmed it will send out tax bills to recover underpaid tax to UK households from June 2026 onwards.
HM Revenue and Customs each year catches up with the financial situation of millions of taxpayers, ‘reviewing the records’ from the tax year which just ended in April and checking that everyone paid the right amount of tax.
One customer who got in touch with the tax office asked for a timeframe for the issuing of P800 letters, the tax summary from HMRC which also outlines how much extra tax you owe (or are owed).
They asked HMRC on Saturday: “Hello, can you let me know if P800 letters have been issued yet?”
The HMRC Customer Support account then told them, via X: “We’ll be automatically reviewing records for the last tax year shortly and we’ll let you know if you’ve overpaid or underpaid tax from June onwards. Search P800 on our GOV.UK website for more details.
“We’ll begin issuing tax calculations from June onwards, so if you owe tax or are due a refund, you can expect to receive one between then and March next year.”
HMRC confirmed the scenarios in which you may get a ‘tax calculation letter’.
It said: “If you’ve paid too much or too little tax by the end of the tax year (5 April), HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will send you either:
a Simple Assessment letter
“This will tell you how to get a refund or pay tax you owe.
You might get a tax calculation letter if you either owe tax or are owed a refund because you:
finished one job, started a new one and were paid by both in the same month
started receiving a pension at work
received Employment and Support Allowance or Jobseeker’s Allowance.”
Laura Suter, Director of Personal Finance at AJ Bell, said: “Notification that your tax code has been changed will often arrive in the form of an HMRC envelope landing on your doorstep. The ‘P800’ form will tell you if your tax code is changing, which allows HMRC to collect a little more tax from your payslip to make up for anything owed.”
